Socks Protect Our Feet
The use of socks has been traced back to some of the earliest ancient civilizations. The people back then used to make socks out of animal skins or matted animal hair. The old Romans and Greeks would fashion socks to wear under their sandals. They would hold the socks in place with handmade strings or little ropes. They would even craft them so that they could fit the thong of their sandals between their toes. Not only did socks protect their feet from extra blisters and wear, but they would also keep their feet a little warmer.
Low Cut Socks
It is easy to see that humans have been customizing their socks for a long time. Who can blame us? Socks stay on our feet all day long, and everywhere we walk, they are with us. It is only natural that we would want them to look and feel as best as we can get them to. Back in the 1960s, when the sneaker, also known as the tennis shoe, became very popular, the industry adapted to the call and rose to the occasion. This is when low cut socks first came out. It turns out that wearing big, lunky grey socks in sneakers looks kind of silly. Most people don’t like to look silly, so as with everything else, humans evolved one step further.
Ankle Socks
Since there are different types of tennis shoes, it makes sense that there are different types of socks to wear with tennis shoes. There are low cut shoes that work great with low cut socks, but what about high top shoes? If you wear high tops with low cut socks you run the risk of getting rub marks on your ankles because they are not protected. Where low cut socks are cut to stop just above the shoe, ankle socks are cut to stop at the top of the ankle. They protect the feet and the ankle but don’t stick out above the high tops.
Sock Sneakers
Sock sneakers really aren’t socks at all. They are sneakers that fit on your feet like socks. You never have to worry about trying them because they simply slip over your feet like a robust pair of slippers. Whether or not you actually wear socks under them is a matter of opinion. However, since they are technically a shoe, it would probably be best to wear socks with them. Socks have the ability to absorb much of the sweat that your feet produce. This means they can get pulled off and washed. Otherwise, that sweat would continue to fester in your shoes without a way to escape.
